Women Quarrel at Thurnscoe

Mary Ann Wood, married woman, Thurnscoe, was the defendant in two summonses issued at the instance of Margaret E. Ward, the first accusing her of having wilfully damaged windows at the same time and place.

The complainant deposed that on the date mentioned, is about 9:30 PM she was in her own house when the stone was thrown through the window. Defendant’s uncle, was in the complainant’s house, eating his supper, advice complainant to fetch a policeman when she returned defendant struck twice.

The second assault was committed inside the complainant’s dwelling, defendant pushing the door open in order to strike her. Christina Rowley and another witness gave evidence on behalf of the complainant.

Defendant also into the box and denied both charges, alleging that those proceedings have been instituted because complainant’s husband suspected her of having informed the police of the doings of some poachers.

Complainant (recall) said she had no wish to proceed with the charge of wilful damage, as some of the panes of glass in the windows were broken prior to the date in question.

For the first offence defendant was bound over in her own recognisances of £5 to keep the peace for six months, and the second charge was withdrawn.
