Current State of South Yorkshire Coal Industry
Whilst the pits are working very badly in Yorkshire generally—in South Yorkshire equally with the West—and prices cannot be maintained, it is remarkable that developments in South Yorkshire are being pushed to an almost unprecedented extent.
At the Oaks Collieries sinkings to the Silkstone seam are being vigorously conducted; at Rylands Main—which, by the way, has resumed work—sinking has gone on for some time; the Mitchell Main Colliery Company are sinking on the estate of Mr. F. J. S. Foljambe, near Brierley; the Hickleton Main Colliery Company are sinking at Thurnscoe, these last to the Barnsley bed, which will be worked on an extensive scale.
At Cadeby the Denaby Main Company, and at Canklow Sir John Brown and Co., are developing large concerns. Yorkshire produced more coal than any other district last year, and it is likely to make a further large advance in the near future.
