Gift Day at Wombwell Parish Church had, up to yesterday, realised £151 18s. 10d.
The L.N.E.R. announce that Mr. A. Clear, Locomotive Depot Superintendent, Mexborough, has been appointed District Locomotive Superintendent at Norwich.
Winners of the admission ticket competition in connection with the recent Montagu Hospital Show at Mexborough were holders of the following tickets: 86, 1896 and 3040.
The final match for the championship of the Yorkshire Cricket Council will be played on the Hickleton Main ground on Saturday between Hickleton Main and Swinton.
It has been arranged that Wing Commander R. B. Dowling, R.A.F., will present the Wings for Victory plaque and certificate earned by Wortley Rural District on September 24th, and receive the log books from the Council.
In four years of war British lifeboats have rescued 5,288 lives. They have rescued more lives in these four years of war than in the last fifteen years of peace. They have rescued twenty-five lives every week. Lifeboatmen have been awarded 177 medals for gallantry by the National Lifeboat Institution. They have also won four British Empire Medals, two Distinguished Service Medals and one George Medal. Seven lifeboatmen have lost their lives on service.
The number of convictions recorded by the R.S.P.C.A. for cruelty has greatly increased this month, when the total is ninety-nine, as against fifty-eight during the same month last year, and seventy-seven in July. Of this total Yorkshire had four. The chief rise is in cases of cruelty to horses where the figure is now twenty-seven, while dogs total eighteen, three persons being disqualified for life, and one for three years, from holding a dog licence. There is also an alarming rise in cases connected with wild birds, twenty-one convictions being obtained. Offences against sheep have risen from one to five, but fowls and cattle show a slight decrease.

Mrs. F. Bradshaw, of Mexborough, has won the South Yorkshire Labour Women’s Advisory Council Scholarship, brought to Mexborough last time by the late Mrs. M. Singleton.
Proceedings have been instituted in the High Court on behalf of Mr. L. Constantine, the West Indies cricketer, against the proprietors of a London hotel for damages for alleged failure to receive and lodge him at their hotel.
At a recent examination held by the Institute of Bankers, Mr. Roy E. Oates, a former pupil of Mexborough Secondary School, now in the National Provincial Bank, Wombwell, was successful. He gained one of the ten distinctions in banking awarded this year.
Squadron Leader J. H. Dunk, D.F.C., of Conisborough, is to take the salute at a National Savings plaque presentation at Conisborough to-morrow (Saturday), which will also be attended by Lord Riverdale, chairman of the Appeals Board of the R.A.F. Benevolent Fund.
The covenant scheme which has been organised by a small sub-committee on behalf of Mexborough Town Nursing Association, has now been closed. It has assured the association (while income tax remains at 10s. in the £) of an income of over £200 a year, from this source alone, for seven years.
