Wins N.A.B.C .Boxing Title

In Liverpool on Saturday, 16 years old Colin Marsden, 15, St Peter’s Gate, Thurnscoe became National Association of Boys Clubs, welterweight boxing champion.

Colin, already champion of the North of England, fought his Southern counterpart for the title, which automatically includes him in the quarter-finals of the junior A.B.A. Championships to be boxed tomorrow (Saturday)

Colin has been a member of Hickleton May Boxing Club for four years. He is Yorkshire champion of the N.A.B.C.and was trained for the Liverpool and Southampton fights by Hickleton Main boxing trainers, Mr T Cowley and Mr J Howley. He has been taking part in contests for 12 months.

Mr George Gibbs, leader of Hickleton Main Youth Club, told a “South Yorkshire times” reporter that Colin was their first N.A.B.C. champion.

Three years ago H Carter reach the finals, but lost his fight. There have been two ABA champions, Ronnie Nathan and Billy Thompson, who later became British and European lightweight champion.

Colin works at Highgate Colliery, where his father, Mr J Marsden is also employed.

His 11 years old brother Graham is not interested in boxing: he prefers football.
