Internment of Well Known Bandsman
The streets of Thurnscoe were lined with people on Monday afternoon when the funeral of Mr Walter Wilcock (35), 141 Deightonby Street took place.
The interment took place at the Thurnscoe cemetery, the service being held in the parish church by the Rev. D.E. Hughes.
Mr Wilcock was a well-known bandsman and at the time of his death he was the first cornet player of the Frickley Colliery Band. He also played with the Manvers Main Prize Man.
He was one of the original players in the Hickleton Main Boys band, which was started by Mr Albert Clegg some 20 years ago.
During his career he had engagements all over the country and played 15 times at the Crystal Palace. He was a winner of a large number of medals and trophies.
In addition to his musical activities he was a keen gardener and was a member of the Thurnscoe East Garden and Allotments Association, and during the last two years he 18 first and two second prizes in the garden shows.
He died last Thursday after an operation in the Warde-Aldam Cottage Hospital Frickley.
The cortage was headed by 44 bandsman from the Hickleton Main, Manvers Main and Frickley Collieries bands.
