Complicated “Dole” Case.
Emily Perry, a single woman of Thurnscoe, was brought up on remand at Doncaster West Riding Court, yesterday, charged with obtaining 25s. by false pretences, the allegation being that whilst working at Batley she received unemployment money. Two specific dates were taken February 21st. and March 7th.
Mr. F. Allen, for the prosecution, stating that she was in regular employment for a considerable period during which it was alleged she received the money in question.
Defendant alleged that on February 21st. she was off with a bad foot and did not attend to receive the money. She pleaded not guilty. The 14th. of February was the last day she went to the Exchange, and she started to work at Batley the 18th.
It was an intricate and complicated case, and after considerable consideration the Chairman (Mr. Brockleby) said there had been some neglect in the office at Mexboro’, and greater care ought be exercised with regard to the certificates, but defendant had received money to which she was not entitled and a fine of £5 was imposed or one month.
