Alban Turner – Batting Mainstay of the Club

Alban Turner’s present Yorkshire Council average is 68.66.

In the Mexboro Evening League matches this season  Turner has scored 513 in 9 matches, his highest scores being 97 not out against Mexborough, 61 not out against Swinton, and 109 not out against Rawmarsh.

Last year Turner was runner-up to Jepson,  Rossington, in the batting averages of the  Yorkshire Council with an average score of 75, against Jepson’s 76. In 1927 Turner just failed to reach 1,000, but made his biggest score for Bolton in the Wombwell Evening League when playing against Dodworth on May 24. On that occasion he scored 166 not out. In 1926, his first season with Bolton, Turner made his biggest Council score for the club against Ackworth on May 25th, when his total was 155 not out.

Born at Goldthorpe, Turner commenced his cricket career at the early age of 15 with Hickleton. He quickly made his name as a batsman, and after several seasons played regularly with Yorkshire Colts for two or three seasons. It was while he was with the Colts that he made one of the biggest hits of his career and incidentally one of the biggest ever seen at the Oval: he knocked a ball on to the famous gasometer.

Turner later returned to Hickleton and was their mainstay until eight or nine years ago when he went on to the professional staff at Farsley at the same time Billy Brown of Darfield was there. Turner played a prominent part for Farsley, but 5 years ago returned once more to Hickleton. Then he took a keen interest in the formation of his present club, and four years became a playing member.

As at Hickleton, Turner has been all along the batting mainstay of the Bolton club.
