“A Despicable Offence”
Thurnscoe Youths’ Raid on Sweet Shop.
What was described by Supt. Minty as “a despicable offence” resulted in four Thurnscoe youths, Thomas S. Clark, blacksmith’s striker, Harold Taylor, Andrew Ewen, and John Carter, haulage hands, being fined £2 each at Doncaster on Saturday for having stolen sweets valued at 1. 4d. from a temperance bar at Thurnscoe, owned by Clifton Barton.
Supt. Minty said defendants went into the shop on the previous Sunday, and while the lady assistant was attending to customers in another room stole a quantity of sweets.
When the assistant came back she saw one of the defendants with his hand in a sweet bottle. She suspected they had stolen a large quantity of sweets, and took stock, ascertaining that 12s. 4d. worth were missing.
When P.c. Ashworth charged them with the offence, they admitted it.
