Hickleton’s Longest Serving Athlete

Longest serving member of Hickleton Main Youth Club Athletics Section is 23-years-old Mary Gregory, who joined the club when she was nine and has just been presented by the club with a bouquet for her services to the club.

The athletics section of the Youth Club had not been opened very long when Mary became a member 13 years ago and there were not as many members or as many facilities then as now.

Mary specialises in the sprint races, the 100 and the 200 yards, and during her 13 years of running she has won 77 prizes, which include glassware, articles of furniture, and more than one canteen of cutlery, and these are displayed in her home, at 193. Houghton Road, Thurnscoe.

Seven Out of Nine

Mary is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Cartlidge, and was married about 18 months ago. Her mother told our reporter that Mary is always saying that she is going to stop running but last season she won seven prises in the nine races she entered, and she is repeatedly beating the handicapper.

She has done all her running in. the Sheffield area, and is very modest about her successes and reluctant to talk about her running.

Mary works in the grocery section of Barnsley British Cooperative Society in Houghton Road. Thurnscoe,
