Atkinson – the death occurred on December 28th at his home, of Mr. Philip Atkinson (49), 14, Norman Street, Thurnscoe, who was well know locally as a cricketing personality. Born near Middlesbrough, he moved to Thurnscoe to work at Hickleton Main and has been playing cricket in the area for over 25 years.

He played for Bolton Municipal (now Dearne) from 1930-34 and then for Hickleton Main in the Yorkshire Council from 1935 to 1956. At Hickleton he captained the Doncaster League Team on a number of occasions and was a member of that team when they won the Doncaster League Championship in 1952.

The funeral took place on December 31st at Thurnscoe cemetery, preceded by a service in St Hilda’s Church conducted by the Rev. K. W. Emerson.
