Soldier – Cuncliffe, James – Buried by Shell

June 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times June 9, 1917

Corporal J Cunliffe
(York and Lancaster)

son of Mr and Mrs William Cunliffe of 28 Butcher St, Thurnscoe, has been killed in action.

He joined the Barnsley Battalion, went to Egypt with them, afterwards going to France. He has seen some very heavy fighting.

He was home on leave in February. He worked at Hickleton Main.

His parents have received the following letter from his Company Sergeant Major E. Rome:

“The men of the 15th Platoon (D company) are desirous of extending through me their heartfelt sympathy to you in the loss of your son Cpl Cunliffe . He was buried consequent on the bursting of a shell, and though all effort was made on his behalf he was dead when  recovered, from the debris. He was a splendid NCO.”
