Maid From America at Wedding
When 18 years old Christine Hogg of Thurnscoe is married at St Joseph’s church on Saturday, one of the bridesmaids will be a eight years old American girl on her first visit to England.
Donna Marie Danglies has come to England for a holiday with her grandparents – Mr Herbert Holmes and his wife, Mary, who emigrated to America 13 years ago.
They return for a visit five years ago, but Donna, who lives with her parents in California, has never been to England before.
They are now staying Christine’s home at 63 Brunswick St, Thurnscoe and will fly back to America in mid October.
Mr and Mrs Holmes come from Buffalo, and Donna flew 3000 miles on her own to meet them before the flight to England.
Mrs Hogg told the “South Yorkshire times” this week: “Donna is fascinated by everything here – she has never seen a fire in a fireplace in her life, and on the way back from the airport we had to stop the car to let her take a good look at a horse and cart – a completely new idea to her.”
Donna’s mother Mrs Maureen Danglies lived with her parents at Gosling Gate, Goldthorpe before they emigrated.
Miss Hogg is manning Mr Barry Grantham.
