A Fiery Wicket

Hickleton found a fiery wicket awaiting them at Mexboro’ and never looked like settling down against the sharply turning deliveries of Reg. Day (picture) and the erratic but dangerous fast stuff of Ernest Robinson, the young Denaby rounder. Hickleton were without Turner, too, though it is doubtful whether even his acknowledged skill and experience would have served to prevent his team’s collapse.
Short fare for the excellent attendance was foreshadowed when Robinson, in his second over, got a ball to whip in so sharply that Yardley was completely beaten and bowled. It was the beginning of a procession, for Fawden alone survived for an appreciable length of time. Cyril Probert managed to get in two sweet straight drives along the carpet before Robinson got his revenge through a half-cock shot in an attempt to pull. Hickleton were all out by 6.20 and Mexboro’ used only two bowlers. Day, in alliance with the “devil” in the wicket, as nearly earned that overworked term “unplayable” as it was possible; and his 9 overs gave him 5 wickets for 13 runs. Robinson took the other 5 for 25.
Mexboro’ lost the wickets of Tibbles, David Brown and Charlie Machin to the Probert brothers before Ernest Robinson, taking his courage boldly in both hands, and trusting to quick feet and a quicker eye, merrily slammed the ball about and in partnership with Ralph Burkinshaw completed the job in eleven overs and 3 balls.
