Few Crumbs of Comfort

Altofts 83   Hickleton 87 for 1

There were few crumbs of comfort for Altofts at Shepherd Lane on Saturday. With little in the batsmanship to match a warm afternoon, they were sent on their way for 83, and Hickleton reached an effortless 87 for the loss of Gibbs’ wicket (at 76).

Armstrong took over with his slow paced bowling at 69, but he brought no brake to Hickleton’s easy scoring.

Armstrong had opened the Altofts innings with Sykes, and was third to fall with his score at 18. Glazzard, in at the fall of the fifth Altofts wicket, was top scorer with 19, and undefeated by either H. Riley or T. B. Mitchell, who shared the Altofts wickets—Riley (picture) 6 for 36 and Mitchell 4 for 35. Pilkington bowled four overs—-one a maiden.

Gibbs batted through a pleasantly confident innings, opening for Hickleton with Riley, and was , unlucky to miss his fifty, turning up a ball from Armstrong and starting for the pavilion before Sykes had barely positioned himself for a certain catch. Riley was 25 not out and Robinson, who joined him, seven not out.

Victory—clear cut, but not particularly exciting!
