“Anything You Can Do…”

A husband-and-wife team are combining forces at Dearne Urban Council in an attempt to increase the strength of the Ratepayers’ Association on the Council.

Mrs. Margaret Crofts, of 158, High Street, Thurnscoe, is standing for election in South Ward for the first time. Her husband, George Crofts, retiring candidate for West Ward is seeking re-election.

Mr. and Mrs. Crofts have been members of the Ratepayers’ Association since its formation in 1966, but although Mrs. Crofts has always been an active member, helping in the organisation at fund raising events of the Women’s Group, she has not stood for election to the Council before.

Equally as Well

She said “I have been thinking for some time that I would like to stand for election – after all, women can do the work equally as men. My husband has given me every encouragement and this year and I have decided to contest South Ward myself.”

Mrs. Crofts owns a hairdressing salon in High Street, Thurnscoe, which takes up a lot of her time during the day, but she is willing to give up her evenings and all free time to work for the Ratepayers’ Association.

She has helped her husband, who is secretary of the association, in much of his work, sacrificing her own time, and has learnt much about the work of the Ratepayers through her keen interest in the Association.
