Metropolitan policeman S.P.Brooke, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Brooke, 71 Britton St, Thurnscoe, has been promoted to the CID has been transferred to Scotland Yard.
His father, who is now retired was enquiry officer for the Dearne area for 43 years. Detective also broke joined the Metropolitan police in 1937, was on duty for he was 21. One of his first important duty was outside Westminster Abbey at the Coronation.
At the outbreak of war he enlisted and served in France with the Military Police Traffic Department. During the evacuation of France he was unable to get away at Dunkirk owing to directing of traffic but managed to reach the South of France several days after Dunkirk.
He was stationed in Kent during the Battle of Britain and received his only injury during the campaign, a burn from shrapnel when he was blown into a crater by a bursting bomb. He was sent out two India when he became R.S.M., special investigation branch and in August 1944 was awarded a first-class commendation for diligence, detective ability and devotion to duty in the arrest of seven persons for conspiracy and the recovery of property.
