Brothers’ Fine Bowling
Amazing Collapse Of Ackworth

The sort of cricket spectators revel in was seen at Hickleton on Saturday when Ackworth made their first appearance on the ground. On a tricky pitch some remarkable bowling had the batsmen on both sides tied up. The brothers Reg. and Cyril Probert (Picture) had the first six Ackworth batsmen out with only one run scored. The game, in actual playing time, took only two hours, during which 120 runs were scored and Hickleton won by 30. This is how the game went.
As a storm was approaching and the light was poor, Hickleton decided to take first knock. With only a run scored in the first over, Senior was clean bowled by North. The next three wickets brought the total to 60, each batsman being well caught immediately after hitting a four. North and Mart, especially the latter, a left-arm slow bowler, had been bowling well but the introduction of Pawson for North was disastrous for Hickleton. Without another run being added four Hickleton batsmen were sent back to the pavilion. Pawson taking all of their wickets. It was only Reg. Probert’s merry knock of 14 that enabled the home side to reach 75. Pawson had 4 for 9 in two overs while Mart had 5 for 32.
Hickleton were disappointed with their score and most people were of the opinion that they were facing defeat, but as in Hickleton’s innings only a single had been scored when the first Ackworth wicket fell, in Reg. Probert’s first over. Cyril Probert followed and four batsmen came and went in his over. By the time the brothers had bowled fifteen over nine Ackworth wickets had fallen with only 19 runs on the board. The first six fell with the total at 1, the seventh at 11, the eighth at 14, and the ninth at 19. Cyril Probert’s analysis at this period read: 8-2-13-5 and Reg’s 7-4-64. Rain held up the game for about 20 minutes, and the light was much better when Ackworth resumed. J Pawson and Pullein were associated in the stand of the day. They raised Ackworth’s total to 45 before Cyril Probert bowled Pullein. The Hickleton bowlers’ final figures were: C. Probert 10 2 17 6. R. Probert 10 4 21 4.
It was a game of surprises, an unlooked-for example of “brighter cricket,” and a triumph for stubborn attack. Ackworth were keen in the field but several players marred their performance. In contrast, all the Hickleton men were “on their toes” and gave a smart display. Scores:
