Burton to Sign for Wolves
Doncaster Rovers are hitting the high lights with the prospect of transferring their talented outside-right, Stanley Burton, to Wolverhampton Wanderers at a fee considerably in excess of previous transfers.
Burton has been with the Rovers for the past five seasons, being recruited from Thurnscoe Vics., at the age of 19. He quickly made his with the Rovers after the departure of Jacky Beynon, and has attracted the attention of more than one First Division side. Fast and strong on the ball, exercising splendid ball control and possessing a most disconcerting swerve, he was watched on Tuesday night, at Rochdale, by Major Buckley, who last season showed his interest in the player.
Negotiations, writes “The Rover’’ have been proceeding a few days, and I am told that the only hitch to a deal is con fined the exact figure at which the Rovers value his services. At the same time I shall be surprised if agreement is not reached within a short time at a figure which will probably exceed the £4,000 which Manchester United are reputed have paid for George Gladwin, the Rovers’ right half back of the season before last. Burton Is about 21 years of age, stands 5ft. 8in., and weighs about 11 st. On form he is one of the most dangerous wingers In the game for apart from his ability In mid-field he has a strong shot.
Late last evening the two clubs had not come to terms over Burton’s transfer, but there is not great deal of difference between the Major’s offer and what the Rovers have asked.
It the deal comes off it will be a record for the Rovers. Their previous highest fee was one of £4,000.
Major Buckley made unsuccessful effort to secure Burton last season. Burton, who joined the club in the 1932-33 season from Thurnscoe Vics, has been a great favourite at Belle Vue.
