‘Bus Burnt Out
This fourteen-seater motor ‘bus backfired in Church Street, Darfield, on Saturday night, and burst into flames, and in a very short time was completely burnt out, as shown in the photograph.
The ‘bus is owned by Mr, S. McAdoo, of Thurnscoe, and plied for hire between Thurnscoe and Barnsley. It had its full complement of passengers at the time, but these were able to escape, most of them by the emergency door at the rear.
The driver, Charles Mackworth, of Cudworth, with great presence of mind threw two tins of petrol out of the ‘bus, but his attempts to put out the flames with a chemical extinguisher were unsuccessful.
Eventually the fire was put out by playing on it from a hydrant. The wrecked vehicle was afterwards shunted into the Urban Council’s depot.
