A Thurnscoe Doctors Tour
Last week Dr and Mrs Robert Malcolm, Thornley House, Thurnscoe, returned from a holiday in Canada, and had many interesting stories of their trip to tell a “Mexborough and Swinton Times” representative who called upon them.
They travel for most of the tour with the party of the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress, of which Mr John Minnikin, general manager of the Hickleton Main Colliery, and his daughter, were also members, but Dr and Mrs Malcolm in addition made several independent expeditions.
They set sail from England on August 13 and arrived at Montréal on the 29th, having first called at Québec
“The trip up the St Lawrence,” said Dr Malcolm, “was one of the most wonderful parts of the voyage. Just before we got into the entrance of the river, we passed a number of icebergs, and we also saw several wales and sharks. On two successive nights we had an excellent view of the Northern lights or the Aurora Borealis.”
At Father Point they were met by the Minister of Mines, the honourable Charles Stuart, who boarded the ship at 2 o’clock in the morning, and gave the part of their first official welcome to Canada.
