Mexborough and Swinton Times October 28 1927
At the quarterly meeting of the Coronation Working Men’s Club on Sunday, Mr John Parker (picture) was appointed permanent secretary.
Mr W Ryles presided and the reports of the various officials were approved.
It was decided, on the notice of a motion, each member should contribute one shilling during the year to give the children of the members an annual treat.
There were several alterations in the rules, one of which was that persons could be admitted as members at 18, but that they could not take any office.
Mr Parker mentioned the good work which was being done by sending members to convalescent homes, and expenditure in such cases during the quarter was about £26.
He reported that the Club now owned all the land at the back of York Terrace, Grange Terrace, and Whitworth buildings. The first part of the land had been purchased some years ago from late Mr Thornley Taylor, and they had purchased the remainder from his son. Although nothing had been done with the land yet, he was sure there will be a time when it would be a great benefit to the club.
Mr Parker has been secretary for 23 years, and is to remain in office without re-election at the member’s pleasure. Mr Parker has also been a member of the Urban Council since urban powers were granted, except for two years of the war when he took over the office of local food control executive officer.
