Dearne U.D.C. – Mr. Harold Hollingsworth

April 1938

Mexborough and Swinton Times April 1, 1938

Another newcomer to local government work is Mr. Harold Hollingsworth, newsagent, of Chapel Street and Houghton Road.

A native of Dodworth, he came to Thurnscoe 28 years ago and worked for some time as a miner at Hickleton Colliery.

He served for nearly four years in France during the War and then returned to Thurnscoe and set up in business as a newsagent. He has done a great deal of public work. For ten years he has been the president of the Barnsley branch of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents, Booksellers and Stationers; a member of the executive of the Yorkshire District for six years; president of the Yorkshire District, and has served three years on the National Council.

For many years he has been actively associated with the Central Methodist Hall and was at one period superintendent of the Sunday School.

He is a past president of the Thurnscoe and District Chamber of Trade and is still a member of that body. Politically he is independent of any organisation.
