Hutchinson Gets a Century

A brilliant innings of 129 including one 6 and 18 fours by J. Hutchinson (captain) was a feature of Hickleton’s 79 runs’ victory over Denaby at Tickhill Square on Saturday.

One of Hickleton’s opening batsmen was dismissed before he had scored, but Hutchinson, helped by Riley (18), Gibbs (17), and Butler (21 not out), took the score to 203 for six wickets declared.

Denaby replied with 124, G. K. Bateson (captain) being highest scorer with 44. Including seven fours. Other double figure men were Hill (22). Pegg (13) Brown (14). Lockwood took 4 for 28 and Sanderson 3 for I5 for Hickleton, and for Denaby. Wathey had 2 for 20 and Williams 2 for 35.

Mexborough opened the account with an eight wickets win over Brampton, at Hampden Road.

The visitors were dismissed for 74 (J. Cavill 25 not put, W. Scholey 12, L Wake 12, R. Denton 11, J. rdle 11). The first five wickets fell for 31 runs, but Cavill and Scholey made a stand of 25. A. Vickers (5 for 39 ) and C . E. Bayes ( 2 for 19) bowled well for Mexborougb.

The home team lost their first two wickets for 18 runs, but A. Auty and A. S. Vollans remained together untill Brampton’s total was overhauled . Auty had a breezy innings for 47 not out, including seven fours and one six while Vollans was undefeated for 19.

Thorncliffe were beaten by six wickets In their home match with Swinton, a feature of which was the batting of Leslie Bedford (Swinton), who scored 73 not out, including three sixes and five fours.

Thorncliffe’s first wicket fell for 12, and they had five wickets down for 83. The innings closed at 108, chief scorers being E. Marshall (21), E. Earnshaw (14), E. Stevenson (12), F. Hollingsworth (12)) and W. Aynesley (11 ) . For Swinton, F. Ellis took 4 for 31, Woodhouse 4 for 28, and I. Ellison 2 for 34.

W B. Broadhead, Swinton’s captain and opening batsman, was bowled by Earnshaw before he had scored, but Bedford and G. Barnett (14) put on 35 runs for the second wicket. The fourth wicket fell at 81 and Swinton’s final total was 109 for four. Bedford was missed when he had scored only 14.

Rockingham Collapse

Rockingham suffered their second defeat at Hoyland Common, where they were beaten by six wickets by Wath.

Rockingham’s opening pair. J. Ivill and T. Fisher, put on 34 runs before being parted, and then followed a remarkable collapse, due to the brilliant bowling of Fieldsend, a medium-fast left arm bowler, who took 9 for 40, including the “hat trick’ in his fifth over. J. Stones (22 not out) tried to stem the collapse but was not supported by later batsmen. The innings closed for 84.

Wath lost the first two wickets for six runs, but Sage (39) and Godfrey (27) put them on the way to victory. Sage hit six fours and Godfrey four fours and one six. For Rockingham, Vickers took 2 for 18.
