After an even first half in the match at Hough Lane on Saturday, Dearne Valley were a goal down early in the second half, and from that point dominated the game. They scored four goals inside the last half hour and won worthily—chiefly through the strength of their halves.

The game throughout was well worth watching, for both sides played clever football under difficult conditions: but Dearne Valley lasted better. It was Dearne Valley’s first appearance in a trophy match this season: Castletlord beat Pontefract 10-0 in an earlier round of this competition.

The wind was across the ground and brought little advantage when Thorley (picture), captaining Dearne Valley, won the toss. .Its main effect was to keep play mainly on the low side of the ground, the boys finding it difficult to get it up against the wind.

Dearne Valley got the lead early. Wandsworth and Clarke started the movement, and the ball was put arrays for Dyson to shoot it into the net very promptly. Castleford played with better combination after that
