Festival Winners – Joyce Davis

Two little Thurnscoe girls were among the successful competitors in Saturday’s successful second venture of the Music Festival Committee.

One was Joyce Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Davis. 20, Thorneley Crescent, who took first prize in the girls’ treble solo claw. She is thirteen and this was her first contest. She has, however, gained some experience in singing in public as a principal in operettas held in the Central Hall, and her father is a well-known local tenor. In the eliminating competition the adjudicator’s comment was, “In spite of a slightly self-conscious rendering, and a tendency to sharpen, this singer has the best grip of the song so far — very sympathetic tone quality ” Both the faults noted practically disappeared in Joyce’s performance in the final.
