Glasses Taken From Thurnscoe Hotel
Two 18-year-old Thurnscoe youths, Leslie Marshall, haulage hand, and Walter Cooke, boot repairer, were summoned at Doncaster on Saturday for stealing a half-pint glass, the property of Jack Limb, of the Fairway Hotel, Thurnscoe, between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on August 27th.
Inspector Waugh said that P.c. Childs was on duty in Station Road, Thurnscoe, at 10-50 p.m., when he had occasion to stop the defendants. He noticed that Marshall’s coat pocket was bulky and asked him what he had in it. Defendant then pulled out a half-pint glass with the stamp “Fairway Hotel, Thurnscoe” marked on it and threw it into a nearby garden. P.c. Childs recovered the glass and found that Cooke had a similar one in his possession. When told they would be reported, Marshall said, “I wonder what it will be this time. I am still .on probation,” while Cooke said, “I am sorry. It is the first time.”
The Chairman (Mrs. W. R. Peal) asked why they stole the glasses and both said they had had a drink and it must have been the beer that caused them to do it.
Marshall was placed under the supervision of the Probation Officer for a year, and Cooke was bound over for twelve months. Each had to pay 10s. 6d. costs.
