Golden Wedding
A Thurnscoe Anniversary
Although he is ill in bed, 72-years old Mr. Charles Atkinson, 14, Northern Street, Thurnscoe East, was able to enjoy a piece of anniversary cake on Tuesday when he and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding.
Mr. and Mrs. Atkinson, who came to Thurnscoe in 1924, met and married in Cleveland, where Mr. Atkinson worked as a plate layer. After he came to Thurnscoe Mr. Atkinson started work at Hickleton Main Colliery. They have had ten children, seven boys and three girls and have a great-grand-daughter. One of their sons was killed at Hickleton Main Colliery in 1946.
Mr. Phillip Atkinson, another son, plays cricket for Hickleton and last season was Captain of the second team.
Mr. Atkinson is a member of Thurnscoe Central Hall Blind Institute and both he and his wife are partially blind. Mrs. Atkinson used to be organist at a Primitive Methodist Church in Cleveland, but she says that her sight prevents her playing now.
A special cake was made for the couple by one of their daughters, Mrs. N. Smith, and the family held a small party on Tuesday.
