Thurnscoe Miner’s Offence

At Doncaster on Saturday, William Whitehurst, miner, of. Thurnscoe, was fined £7, or two months in default, for having obtained £5 5s. by false pretences from the Doncaster Board of Guardians.

Edgar Hudson, relieving officer, said Whitehurst applied for relief on December 1st., 1928; and was in receipt of it up to June 7th, when witness heard that he was drawing unemployment benefit. He asked the accused about this, and he gave an emphatic denial, but later he told witness that he knew he had been doing wrong and was willing to repay the money.

He had been receiving 22s. relief and 30s. unemployment benefit weekly.

The Clerk: He has been doing well.

Whitehurst pleaded for another chance, and said he had a good character. He was hard pressed to do it. He served in the army. He had been out of work eight months, but had now secured a job at Grimethorpe.
