Ellison Takes 9 for 28

Irving Ellison, medium fast bowler, had a major part in Swinton’s seven wickets’ defeat of Elsecar at Swinton. He took all but one of the wickets, bowling six and taking three by catches, for 28 runs.

He bowled throughout the innings and his achievement included three wickets taken in one maiden over, while one his fast balls damaged the middle stump.

Against such a whirlwind performance, Elsecar, batting first, were unable to get going, and though H. Whittaker not out), and F. L. Wrightson (11) attempted a stand the wickets fell regularly, and the innings closed at 44. R. Widdison (11) was the other double figure scorer.

  1. N. Bedford, opening the Swinton innings, struck out at a loose ball and was caught by Wrightson to provide R. White with his 60th wicket this season. W. Broadhead, the other opening bat, was dropped in similar circumstances when he was three, and went on to make an undefeated 22, and with C. Lee (12), put on 27. L. Hudson dismissed Lee and E. Hind at 32 with successive deliveries. G. Barnett was not out 8.

Turner’s Bowling Spell

In their last home match. Hickleton Main, thanks to a good bowling spell by veteran Alban Turner. turned what looked like a certain draw into a win over South Kirkby.

Hickleton made 155, chief scorers being J. Riley (52), H. Riley (33), J. Sanderson (18) and C. Probert (17)

South Kirkby’s opening pair, G. Fletcher (41) and L. Town (10) defied Hickleton’s fast bowlers and put on 48. Turner then came on and with his slow spinners took 7 for 9 runs, the innings ending at 91.

 Mexboro’ Beat Neighbours

Good bowling by Tony Leach (4 for 10) and veteran T. Hargreaves (3 for 32) was largely responsible for Wath’s eight wickets’ defeat by Mexborough at Hampden Road.

Wath’s opening pair, W. Rippon (22 and C. Wilkinson 18). put on pitbefore the latter was dismissed. Rippon and Brooks (19) carried the total to 57 for the second wicket, but the remaining batsmen fared rather badly and the innings closed at 114. Other double figure scorers were D. Fieldsend (14). S. Ellis (14) and F. Godfrey (14).

A.S. Vollens (42 not out) and S. White (34, including six fours), had an opening partnership of 58 for Mexborough, but after White’s dismissal the rate of scoring slowed considerably and Wath’s total was only passed after two hours batting.

  1. Howarth (19 not out) and T. Hargreaves (10) were other double figure batsmen. For Wath, Sage had 1 for 16 and F. Beacham 1 for 19.
