Hat Trick, Hard Hitting, and a Disputed Catch.

Hickleton  165  Thorncliffe  97

The match at Thurnscoe started sedately enough but contained ample incident and excitement before it finished.

Hickleton, with first use of a good wicket, scored 65 in the first hour, but after that forced the pace a little. The chief danger in the Thorncliffe bowling came from Leach, who again did well. He took 5 wickets for 40 runs.

Hickleton’s total was not a formidable one on such a day, but Hartley soon made it appear so. He had Faulkner and Taylor back in the pavilion with only 30 runs on, while Taylor was getting rid of Davis at the other end. The innings, in fact, was little more than a procession, with one short but notable halt: the intervention of Gwyn. The Thorncliffe captain made a great and characteristic effort for his side He made only 13 scoring shots but they were worth 51 runs. He hit 4 sixes and 6 fours, to make all but three of his runs by boundary strokes, and his 51 was his contribution to the 73 on the board when he left, with four wickets down. But his attempt to knock the bowling off its length and give the later batsmen a chance failed completely. Hartley, having of him caught by Longley, at once put Hickleton well on top again by taking the wickets of Stevenson and Adams with the next two deliveries—the first hat trick for Hickleton this season. As Leach also fell at the same total Thorncliffe were a well beaten side. As a matter of fact, they were weakly represented, for they had in three Chapeltown Leaguers in place of Hollingsworth, Smith and Vernon.

There was considerable disputation near the end of the match—though it did not affect the result—when Longley held a lofty ball hit by Windle to the edge of the boundary. The umpire ruled that Longley’s feet were over the edge when he got the ball: but if so, it was contended, the umpire should have awarded a. six, not a four as he did.

Hartley finished with 6 wickets for 19 runs, his most notable performance of the season. He bowled only 8 overs and was unchanged. Thorncliffe scored 97 thanks to Gwyn.
