Inquests at Mexborough and Denaby

December 1910

Yorkshire Early Bird December 22, 1910

Mr J Kenyon Parker, Deputy Coroner, held two inquests yesterday in the Mexborough district, one in the town itself and one at Denaby.

At the latter place the inquiry had written to the death of Charles Marshall (63), a plate layer, of 14, Castle Grove, Conisborough, was killed at the Cadeby Colliery on Monday by being knocked down by full wagons which were being shunted.

He was killed almost instantly, a post-mortem examination revealing an extensive practice of the skull.

The engine driver Charles Bulmer, told the coroner that he never saw the deceased until he was knocked over. The engine whistle was sounded all the way up the bank.

A verdict of “Accidentally killed” was returned.

At the primitive Methodist Institute, the Deputy Coroner held an inquest on the body of Mary Atkinson (6), daughter of a Thurnscoe miner named William Henry Atkinson, who died in the Mexborough Montagu Hospital on Tuesday morning from burns sustained at their home on Sunday morning.

The girl was left in the kitchen with two younger children, the fire being covered with a guard. The mother told the deceased not to go into the sitting room, where there was an uncovered fire, but she only got to the top of the stairs when she heard a scream. Her husband jumped out of bed, and found the deceased coming out of the sitting room in flames. He put the fire out, and the little girl was removed to the hospital where she died.

A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned.
