Some Giants at Thurnscoe
The Champion
G. Hickman and W. Postlethwaite the partners who produced the “champion” leak,
shown in the centre of the exhibit.
On Saturday the 4th annual leek and vegetable show was held in the Coronation club, Thurnscoe. Prizes to the value of £23 were competed for.
The winners with leeks were:
1 W Postlewaite (gold medal given by Coronation Club for best leek in show): 2 leeks, 85 5-8 cubic inches. His champion leek measured 30 inches;
2 Cartledge, 3 J Meachin, 4 J Lawton, 5 and special J Robinson, 6 A Robinson, and special G Hickman, 8 and special Mrs. Lawton, 9 and special W Hunt, 10 W Davison, 11 and special T Patterson, 12 Mrs. Patterson, 13 and special F Nicholson, 14 and medal Mrs. Hunt, 15 and special J Davis. 16 and special Dodds, 17 Mrs. Davis, 18 and special T Thompson. 19 G Patterson, 20 and special Mrs. Thompson. 21 Newton, 22 Mrs. Nicholson, 23 Mrs. Walker, 21 and special E Hall, 25 T Alexander.
In the vegetable classes the awards were: Celery: 1 J Lawton, 2 E Cartledge.
Cauliflower: 1 Cartledge.
Carrots: 1 Mrs. Lawton, 2 Mrs. Patterson.
Beet: 1 A Robinson, 2 Cartledge.
Potatoes: 1 T Thompson, 2 W Hunt.
Tray: 1 J Lawton, 2 W Hunt, 3 G Patterson, 4 J Davis.
These four trays will be sold by suction for the Children’s Outing Fund.
Bread: 1 Mrs. Patterson, 2 Mrs. Thompson, 3 Mrs. J. Lawton.
