An ambitious sports and gala programme for the Dearne Comforts Fund is being staged to-morrow (Saturday).

Wath’s chief holiday attraction is a gala to be staged tomorrow on the Athletic Ground in aid of the Comforts Fund.

Dolcliffe Vale, Mexborough, will be the venue for a big gala in aid of Mexborough Active Services Comforts Fund on Monday.

Mr. H. B. Sparkes, postmaster at Mexborough for the past nine years, has been appointed postmaster of Chorlton-cum-Hardy.

The half-yearly meeting of members of the Barnsley British Co-operative Society, Ltd., is to be held next Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the Public Hall, Barnsley.

Thurnscoe Police and Special Constables have won a cricket competition for the cup offered by Capt. H. W. Leggott, Sub- Divisional Commander of the local Special Constabulary.

By authorising their employers to deduct a penny a week from their pay, 5,000,000 wage earners and small salaried workers have now raised nearly £900,000 for the Red Cross.

At Wednesday’s meeting of Swinton Urban Council the Sanitary Inspector reported that many dustbins were falling to pieces, but they were unable to get any to replace them.

A portrait in oils executed by Brother J. Major, of Swinton, was presented to Bro. J. Kilgallon, R.0.H., P.P.G.P., P.G.W.(Eng.), at an R.A.0.B. gathering at Bradford on Sunday.

A Bank Holiday Monday gala for Swinton War Welfare Fund is to be held in the grounds of Milton House, Swinton, kindly placed at the disposal of the organisers by Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Baker.

Mr. J. A. Hall, of Wombwell, President of the Yorkshire Mineworkers’ Association, was among the first to descend the Crigglestone Colliery after the accident in which 22 men lost their lives this week.

The Right Hon. Tom Williams, M.P. for Don Valley, is happily recovering from an attack of arthritis for which he has been taking treatment at Droitwich. He has been the recipient of many congratulations on the honour recently conferred on him.

Mr. Harold Woodcock, of Thurnscoe, who stands 4ft. 2in. in height and claims to be the world’s smallest market trader, presented himself for medical examination for national service this week. He was placed in the lowest medical category on account of his stature.

The long list of subscriptions to the Montagu Hospital, Mexborough, for the month of July, which is printed in another column, is striking evidence of the way in which everyone is rallying to the aid of the Hospital during a period of exceptional difficulty. The income for the month is very gratifying and encouraging to all who have the interest of the institution at heart.
