Mexborough and District League Drastic Dealing With The Umpires

A special meeting of this League was held at Mexborough last night.

Mr. W. Nicholson (president) in the chair.

The delegates present, voted on Swinton’s application to play Mr. H. L Haigh, and by nine votes to three refused it, abiding the present rule that all amateurs must reside within three miles of the club for which they play.

With regard to the dissatisfaction among the umpires, it was reported that the threatened strike was only partially carried out last Saturday, five of the 12 appointed officials failing to turn up. A proposition was moved and carried that the following umpires, Messrs. Scholes (Rawmarsh), Mason, and Amos (Hickleton), Smith and Gricsley (Mitchell Main). Jenkinson (Mexborough), and Bennett (Wombwell Main), be struck off the list. On question from the chair whether all the clubs could still guarantee two umpires, according to rule, it appeared that, with the exception of Hickleton, each could guarantee one more, and it was decided that fresh registrations for the vacancies should be made quickly possible.

A protest was received from Hickleton Main claiming both points from Denaby, who, it was stated, had benefited by a draw through the umpires declaring the game concluded 15 minutes before time, when Denaby with one wicket fall, still wanted 59 runs. Adjudication was adjourned until the next meeting
