Barnsley Independent – Saturday 20 December 1919
Sheffield Challenge Cup.
Monckton Ready For Next Round.
Monckton 3 Thurnscoe P.A. 0
There was a good attendance at Monckton to witness this cup-tie with Thurnscoe P.A.
Monckton were handicapped for player’, Joe Rodgers being injured, and Harry Smith playing with Barnsley Reserves. Monckton were the first to attack, a centre from Wass bringing Adamson out to fist away. End to end play was the order for the first half hour until Monckton attacked from the left. Adamson throwing the centre away. The ball was returned into the centre for Bennett to open the score after 35 minutes.
This caused Monckton to set up a series of dangerous raids on the Thurnscoe citadel, but Adamson was not to be beaten again In this half.
In the second half Monckton started to make it hot for the visitors. A pass from Bennett to Bailey found the latter with a clear course for goal. Adamson came out to meet him but Bailey shot by him into the vacant goal after ten minutes’ play.
Hereabouts a regrettable incident occurred, when a player was ordered off the field.
Monckton set up a determined attack, and Cornfield scored the third goal for Monckton with a grand shot.
The game was finished in semidarkness, with Monckton comfortable winners by 3 goals to 0. The best man on the geld was Adamson, the Thurnscoe goalkeeper, who saved his side from a heavy defeat.
