The Victims.
One of the victims, Mr. Richard Watson, was very well known throughout the Dearne Valley in connection with the teaching profession and school sport. He joined the staff of the Hill Council School, Thurnscoe, about two years ago. His home is in Spilsby, and he has lived at 8, John Street, Thurnscoe.
He was 28 years of age, and was keenly interested in every kind of sport. He successfully organised football and cricket teams at his school, and showed keen interest in the work of the Dearne Valley School Sports Association, of which he became president last July. He was also a member of the committee of the Mexborough branch of the National Union of Teachers, and of the West Yorkshire County Association, and represented the Mexborough branch at the Llandudno Conference at Easter. He was interested in amateur theatricals, and was an acting member of the Mexborough Amateur Operatic Society.
The Cudworth victim, Mr. Samuel Herbert Ellis, eldest son of Mr. William Newton Ellis, a fish merchant, of 216, Pontefract Road, Cudworth. He was in the service of the Yorkshire Electric Traction Company as a bus driver, and was returning from Grimsby, where he had been on business; when the accident occurred.
He was a native of Great Houghton, and removed to Cudworth with his parents some years ago. He was 33 years of age and unmarried. His father was formerly licensee of the. Old Crown Inn, Great Houghton, and the family are well known and greatly respected in the area.
