Never Had a ‘Laik Day’

Never having a “laik” day in 52 years in mining is a proud record of Mr Hubert Adams, of 75, Briton Street, Thurnscoe East, who has retired from Highgate Colliery, Goldthorpe.

He was born in Bolton and is a member of a well-known Bolton family, members of whom include landowners, shopkeepers, former churchwardens and market gardeners. One uncle formerly owned Bolton Mill.

“I have never had a voluntary shift off during all those years,” he told a “South Yorkshire Times” reporter this week, “I have been off sick a bit, and once on compensation, but never a “laik” day.

In retirement Mr Adams will still enjoys two favourite pastimes, old time dancing and gardening. He is MC at dancing sessions that since a Memorial Club, but he is a committee member. He is also to “help the wife a bit; I think she deserves it.”

Mr Adams and his wife, Matilda have two sons and four grandson.
