New Thurnscoe Headmaster
Chapeltown Man Appointed
Mr W.E. Hill, an assistant at Kirk Balk Modern School has been appointed Headmaster of Thurnscoe Junior Boys. School.
From 1923 onwards he has been a geophaphy and physical training specialist at Kirk Balk, playing a prominent part also in the social life of the school. Before 1933 he had teaching experience in Ecclesfield, Cudworth, and Hoyland Common, where, in each case, he impressed by his enthusiasm and willingness to help in every form of school activity.
Between 1941 and 1945 he saw service in the R.A.F., and, for a time, was in Canada. He used this opportunity to make visits to the U.S.A. While in the service he was instructor to pre-air crew units, led discussion groups, and organised station and sports entertainments. In social and public life he has held a variety of positions associated with his native village of Warren, with the Methodist Church, .and with local associations of the National Union of teachers.
In church affairs he has been a local preacher since 1925, Sunday School superintendent since 1934, Trustees Treasurer since 1940 and, since 1946, organising secretary of the Renovation Fund; in Union matters, be is secretary of the Hoyland branch of the N.U.T.,, teacher representative on the executive of Division 19, and for many years a delegate at West Yorkshire and West Riding Teachers’ Association meetings
To his new post he will early with him the best of good wishes from Hovland, and Thurnscoe people will find in him a man prepared both to interest himself, deeply in local matters and to express himself in a very cogent and forthright way.
