Obituary.

Charles Overton

The interment took place at Thurnscoe on Wednesday of Mr. Charles Overton who died at his home, 128, Houghton Road. Thurnscoe, on Sunday at the age of 71.

A service was conducted by the Rev. D.F. Hughes in St. Helen’s Church.

Mr. Overton was well known throughout the district in sporting circles. A native of Colton, Templenewsam, he came to Thurnscoe in 1904 and worked at Hickleton Main Colliery up to his retirement four years ago.

In his early days he played cricket in West Yorkshire with Whitwood, Altofts and Featherstone. He also played rugby union and took part in the memorable final at Leeds playing with Wakefield Trinity against Pontefract in the season 1890-1891.

At Thurnscoe he played cricket with Hickleton Main in the Mexborough League and was a member of the team that won the League in seasons 1905 and 1907. In his latter years he was well known as an Umpire in the Yorkshire Council and Mexborough Evening Leagues.

He was a vice-president of the Hickleton Main Cricket Club and a member of the ground committee. He was a life member of the Thurnscoe Cross Butcher Street Club, where the flag was flown at half mast this week.

The cortege was headed by representatives from the Hickleton Main Cricket Club, and the Working Men’s Club. Mourners were: Mrs. M. A. Overton (widow). Mr. and Mrs. A. Overton (son and daughter-in-law). Mr. and Mrs. C. Wilson (daughter and son-in-law), Mr F. Overton and Mr. C Overton (sons), Mr. and Mrs. D. Smith (grand-daughter), Miss Connie Wilson (grand-daughter), Mrs. Hudspeth, Mrs. A Barnes, and Miss L. Jones.

There were many floral tributes including wreaths from the Hickleton Cricket Club and the Working Men’s Club.
