Oldest Resident’s Death

Thurnscoe’s oldest resident, Mr John Thomas Humphries, died on Sunday at the age of 90, at 9, Shepherd Lane, the home of his daughter.

A native of of Bilston, Staffordshire, Mr. Humphries had worked in the mines all his working life.

Coming to Thurnscoe 42 years ago he worked at Hickleton Main before retiring about 12 years later.

He and his wife, who died 17 years ago, celebrated their Golden Wedding on April 12th, 1919. Their second son, Joe, will be remembered as the old County and England cricketer. As a wicket-keeper he played for Derbyshire for several years and toured Australia with the English team in the season 1907-8.

Mr. Humphries was one of the pioneers of the Derbyshire Mineworkers’ Association and on April 19, 1897 he was presented with a large marble clock “as a token of respect for valuable services rendered, from his fellow workmen of Langwith and district.”

He is survived by two sons and three daughters, 13 grandchildren and eight, great grandchildren.The funeral took place yesterday.
