On Melton Hill – “Shifting Some,”

September 1931

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 18 September 1931

On Melton Hill.

“Shifting Some”

“I admit we were shifting some,” was the remark alleged to have been made to a constable by a Thurnscoe youth, who was summoned along with two others at Doncaster on Tuesday for riding a bicycle in a dangerous manner.

The youths were John Joseph Saxon, John Ashwood, and William E. Cook, pithands, all of Thurnscoe. P.c. Claxton said that on August 15th he saw defendants riding down Melton Hill at a very fast speed. He signalled them to stop, but they went yards past him before they could pull up. There were a number of people about at the time, including several small children, and the hill was very dangerous.

Witness asked the defendants why they had come down at such a furious speed, but they made no reply. When told they would be reported, Cook said “We were just testing our bikes.”

Saxon said “I admit we were travelling some,” and Ashwood made no reply.

Herbert Bradder, of Melton, gave corroborative evidence, and the defendants were fined 10s. each.
