Persistent Cruelty – Thurnscoe Woman Gets Order.

September 1929

Mexborough and Swinton Times September 27, 1929

Persistent Cruelty.

Thurnscoe Woman Gets Order.

A rather unusual procedure was adopted at Doncaster West Riding Police Court on Tuesday, when in a case concerning an application for separation order by a Thurnscoe woman, her solicitor (Mr. C. L. Crawford) asked that written evidence should be allowed as it was too repulsive to put to complainant. This was allowed.

Applicant was Mrs. Kathleen Murphy, of Thurnscoe, who also summoned her husband for assault on September 30th.

Defendant, James Murphy, read the evidence, and declared it was all lies. He had never been cruel to his wife, and the assault complained of was a pure accident.

The magistrates made a maintenance order for 30/- a week and granted a separation order, with custody of the three children.

For the assault, Murphy was bound over.
