Potato Week Plans
Montagu Hospital Show Next Year
A well-attended meeting of representatives of allotment societies in the Mexborough Montagu Hospital area was held at the Hospital on Tuesday, Mr. E. W. Sykes, a member of the Management Board, presiding.
Societies represented were: Queen Street, Swinton; Queen Street (South) Swinton; Mexborough; Talbot Road, Swinton; Goldthorpe and District; Newhill; Bolton-on- Dearne: Dearne District; Thurnscoe East; Queen Street (East) Swinton; Harlington and District.
The Barnsley British Co-operative Society wrote saying they were prepared to accept vouchers in connection with the “Potato Week.” and that they would make a contribution to the prize money.
Mr. Sykes also reported that Mr. W. P. Turer, President of the Hospital, had kindly offered to make up the balance required to meet the prize money. It was also reported that posters setting out full particulars for the “Potato Week” were available for each area. The final arrangements for the “Potato Week” (September 20th to 28th) were completed. It was agreed that the various societies in each area make their own arrangements for the final collection of potatoes to a central point in each area, after which they agreed to contact Mr. Sykes, who would arrange transport to the Hospital.
Targets for each area are: —
Dearne (including Bolton, Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe): 3 tons
Wath (including West Melton and Newhilll, 2 tons.
Mexborough: 35 cwt
Swinton (including Kilnhurst) : 30 cwt
Harlington 5 cwt
In connection with the competition that is being run in each area during the “Week,” it was agreed that the secretaries of the societies make their own arrangements and conduct the area competitions which close on September 26th.
When winners for each area have been decided the winning two potatoes in each area will be brought to the Hospital for the final competition on Saturday, October 3rd, at 3 p.m.
Several representatives said potatoes in their allotments had been affected by pests, but their members would play their part by giving surplus vegetables to the Hospital.
