At a recent gathering of officials and staff of the Hickleton Main Colliery, a Westminster chimes clock, suitably inscribed, was presented to Mr John William Cartledge, a former surveyor at the colliery, who has been appointed chief surveyor at the Denby colliery, near Derby

Mr Le Brun, manager of Hickleton Main Colliery, made the presentation.

Mr Cartledge was educated at the Mexborough Secondary School, following up his studies at the Department of applied sciences, Sheffield University, where he was successfully passing the Own Office examination and obtain the certificate as a mines surveyor at the early age of 18.

A left-hander, he played cricket for Hickleton Main in the Mexborough and District league, the Yorkshire Council and the Doncaster league. His best performance was one of 161 not out in the final for the Doncaster Cup which Hickleton won in 1933.

He was a sideman at St Hilda’s Church, Thurnscoe East, and a member of the Parochial Council.
