A Gay Afternoon at Thurnscoe
the cricket at Thurnscoe on Saturday was bright, breezy and bracing and Hickleton won a brilliant victory by two wickets after been set to get 231 runs in two hours.
The match was full of unexpected turns of fortune: to Begin with Rossington lost four good wickets, before they got 50 runs on the hoard. But the innings suddenly stiffened in the middle and Jepson went on to fall just 17 short of the century; and Hickman, Widdowson and Ball hacked him up to well that at ten-time Rositington appeared to have ,what is generally called in Yorkshire Council circles “a safe total.”
Hickleton however made a bid for victory from the first and carried it off cleverly. Longley played a very good innings for his half century. He and Cartledge were together for, only 45 minutes, but in that time contributed 101 runs. Longley’s chief hits were a six and seven fours. Cartledge hit six fours, and each of the nine batsmen who went to the wicket did his share nobly.
For Hickleton, Taylor took 4 wickets for 47 runs—and each titme he got a wicket it was with the last ball of the over; and Bennett, 3 for 35.
Rossington 230 Hickleton 232 for 8
Jebson 83, Hickman 34, Reynolds 40 Senior 32, Longley 52, Cartledge 42
