Another Thurnscoe Decoration
Bombardier Joseph Butler, of Thurnscoe, now serving in France with a Trench Mortar Battery, received the Military Medal on January 28 for gallantry displayed in the neighbourhood of Beaumont Hamel last November.
Bombardier Butler, who is 24 and unmarried, formerly worked at Hickleton Main.
He enlisted in the R.F.A.in January 1915, and went to France the following April. During the advance at Bowman Hamel, he came upon a wounded British captain in a third line German trench, and with the help of a comrade carried the officer into comparable safety.
They had to traverse 2 miles of broken ground, and were under shell fire for the greater part of the distance, but got through without a scratch.
