Soldier – Dolby J. – Died of Wounds

October 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times October 20, 1917

Lance Corporal J Dolby

Mrs Dalby, School View, Thurnscoe, has received official, information that her husband Lance Corporal J Dolby (York and Lancaster) died of wounds on October 9 in France.

She has received the following letter from his sergeant:

“I am writing to offer you my very deepest sympathy with you in the great loss we shall sustained in the death of your husband, who was wounded in action the 9th inst part and died later in the day in hospital.

Your husband was in my Scout section, and I feel that I have lost one of my best and cheeriest men. He was, I think, a favourite with everyone. I fear that anything I can say will not be of much comfort to you in your great sorrow. Having lost a brother myself out here, I can realise how you feel.

Our only comfort appears to be that the one we love, lost his life in a great and worthy cause.”

Cpl Spencer writes:

“I write on behalf of my comrades and myself to sympathise with you in the loss of your husband. He was wounded on the ninth of this month and was got down to some hospital, where it is learned he died of wounds.

I can assure you is absented greatly felt by us all, as he was a good and a good soldier.
