July 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times July 28, 1917

Lance Corporal Arthur Eli Rogers

Youngest son of Mrs Rogers, Togo buildings, Thurnscoe, was killed in action on June 6.

A letter from Private Cook, followed by the official intimation, conveyed the news to the parents.

A letter has also been received from Lt W J Smith, saying that he was wounded and died in a few minutes. The Lt also says:

“I have had command of the Platoon for three months, and during that time have noticed your son at work, and in the billet. If I wanted a man for a risky job your son was the first to volunteer.”

Lance Corporal Rogers was highly respected at Thurnscoe. He joined the Yorkshire dragoons in 1915, and rose to the rank of sergeant instructor. He was subsequently transferred to the York and Lancaster Regiment.

For 12 years prior to joining the army he was a member of the Thurnscoe Wesleyan Church choir. He was a talented vocalist. He was also a member of the cricket and football clubs, and worked at the Hickleton Main Colliery.
