St. John Ambulance Work Screened.
The remarkable work of the St. John Ambulance Association is being brought in vivid fashion before the public by District Officer 0.Hanmer in his capacity as official touring demonstrator.
At. Barnsley. yesterday, Mr. Hanmer gave to the Press a private view of his miniature drama. “The Message, showing on the screen how life is saved through the agency of the St. John Ambulance Association.” The Message – is the story of a wireless “S.0.S.” on behalf of a man taken ill on board a ship in mid-Atlantic and reveals the attention of the Ambulance men in his transit from ship to ship and the successful operation in a London hospital.
Mr. Hanmer, it, is interesting to relate, has an intimate connection with the Sheffield district. He was born at, Darfield, and began work at the age of 13 at the Hickleton Colliery. He met with an accident, which almost had a fatal termination and became one of the first trained mine rescue workers in the kingdom.
He led rescue parties to the Cadeby colliery following the great disaster there some years ago. Mr. Hanmer has carried off numerous trophies in ambulance work and life-saving, and has the distinguished honour of Serving Brother of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, granted by the King.
