Stealing Turnips

Thurnscoe Miner Fined

Gideon Jones, a miner of Thurnscoe, or some of my George Hardy, a farmer, of Stotfold, for stealing growing turnips out of the complainant’s field of November 5.

Mr Hardy said the defendant came out of a plantation and pulled five turnips up. One of the workmen asked him for his name, whereupon he abused the man scandalously.

He also pulled his coat off and wanted to fight. If there was not a stop put to such conduct people would get as many turnips out of the field as ever. The value of the stolen turnips amounted to 1/–.

Defendant, who did not appear, was fined 5/– and costs and the damages.
